I had promised my son years ago that once he turned 18 I would take him on a Virgin Voyages cruise – they are an adults only cruise line so we had to wait – but we didn’t wait long after he technically became an adult! My son made the transition to adulthood late April and graduated from high school late May so we set sail late June. We invited his best friend (also 18 and a recent graduate) to join us and to say they had the time of their lives wouldn’t even come close to covering it!

We started our five day journey in Miami with two sea days and two island stops on the itinerary. Our first port of call was Cozumel but we chose to ferry to Playa Del Carmen since we had never been before and the second is a secluded island in the Bahamas. I have equal appreciation for languid days at sea and adventures in new places.

Happy hour on Richard’s Rooftop was a non negotiable daily appointment and was one of our favorite spots on the Valiant Lady. The main pool area is always in party mode so this was where we chose to retreat to on sea days, because this space is limited to those with “Rockstar” status it was quiet and relaxing which is what we needed to counter the busy travel days and raucous nights on board.

The goals I set for our day trip into Playa Del Carmen included consuming loads of fresh ceviche, guacamole & salty margaritas, a massage on the beach, exploring Ave 5 and a swim in one of the many Cenotes (natural sinkholes filled with fresh water, pictured above) we were able to check all of them off the list making for one of my favorite days on the trip.

Bimini Island in Bahamas was our other port of call while on our Virgin Voyages adventure. It was probably the most relaxing of all our days. The island is so small that the distance travelled from the ship to the beach club is super short. Absolutley no time is lost getting to the important stuff like taking a dip in the aquamarine waters, sipping rum punch and napping under a beach umbrella.

What I came to realize about sailing with Virgin Voyages is that their main focus is having fun. There is an activity for everyone on board: if you’re into pop culture trivia, puzzle making, karaoke, wine tasting, shopping, dancing, culinary experiences or just chilling on chaise with a bucket of champagne (thats me) In hindsight I wish we had booked a longer voyage and that being said I’m already looking forward to my next sail with Virgin Voyages!
