…and it’s Monday again. The weekends are far too short, especially during the summer months when there is so much fun to be had and great weekend-casual outfits to be worn. We made it to the beach on Saturday, the sky was overcast but that was fine, it was balmy and my eight year old had no trouble immersing himself in the chilly water. I was in mid conversation with our friends who were with us at the beach when I noticed a big sand covered glob on my right foot. Upon closer inspection I came to the horrible realization it was a tar ball! This tar ball that ostensibly came from the recent Santa Barbara oil spill, was sticky, smelly and terribly messy. The nearby lifeguard gave me a paper towel and some baby oil but it wasn’t enough, I spent the rest of the afternoon with a layer of toxic tar covering my toes and fresh pedicure. Pedicure ruined aside, my heart broke thinking of all the sea animals that are effected and killed daily by these oil spills that happen more frequently than we will ever know, the oil companies need to be held accountable! I grew up in an oil/gas/petroleum driven economy both my parents worked in the industry as did most of my relatives and friend’s parents. We all drive cars and fly in planes I know we can’t just stop producing oil (or can we?) but there has to be a way to stop the destruction of our oceans. Let me know if any of you have any ideas or know of any great organizations that oppose off shore drilling, I feel I need to get involved in raising money and awareness. Sorry to start the week off with such a serious topic, I can only hope the light, simplicity of my outfit can offset the gloom.
lots of love, Zia
PS Once I returned home, I eventually was able to remove the tar from my foot with organic coconut oil
